Add a canvas

Center an image inside a final size and fill the surrounding space with a background.

Reference edition 2.0.0. Version 2.0.0 is a pre-release for Windows and Linux, available by manual download. Some screenshots come from an earlier development edition and may show different controls; their values are examples. Review your package’s release notes and saving options before processing.

When to use it

Use Canvas for square product photos, margins, or consistent catalog sizes while retaining the full framing. Unlike a Resize preset, it does not have to stretch the photograph to fill the rectangle.

Open Resize → Canvas. It shares up to 100 images with the sizing tabs. Prefer JPEG, PNG, WebP, BMP, TIFF, or supported HEIC/HEIF. Convert AVIF and ICO to PNG first.

Controls

ControlInitial value or options
SizeInitially 1080 × 1080 px. Sliders range from 1–8192 px; entering a larger positive integer manually extends the range.
BackgroundInitially Color, #FFFFFF. The HEX button opens the color picker; Transparent is also available.
SavingCreate copies or Overwrite originals.
Apply canvasPrepares output and asks for confirmation.
ClearEmpties the shared selection.

Enter both dimensions as positive integers. Fields and sliders stay synchronized. The final size is the canvas, not necessarily the photograph inside it. Large canvases can require substantial memory.

How the image is placed

The image is centered horizontally and vertically. Larger images shrink proportionally to fit. Smaller ones keep their size and receive more surrounding background; Canvas does not automatically enlarge them.

Choose a custom color with the HEX button and native color picker, or select Transparent. Canceling the picker or switching to Transparent keeps the last chosen color. The screenshot shows 1080 × 1200, #8080FF, and Create copies; these are example settings, not requirements. The reduced preview changes with the selected image, background, and dimensions. It shows composition and source/output sizes, not final detail at 1:1. Changing controls does not save files.

Transparency

With Transparent selected, PNG, WebP, TIFF, AVIF, and HEIF retain their format when an encoder is available; other formats become PNG, including JPEG, BMP, GIF, and ICO. The confirmation reports conversions. Partly transparent pixels blend once with a solid background or retain their alpha on a transparent canvas. The preview checkerboard only indicates transparency and is not saved in the image.

Procedure and example

  1. Load producto.png, 1200 × 800.
  2. Enter 1080 × 1200 in Canvas.
  3. Choose Color, select #8080FF with the HEX button, and leave Saving set to Create copies.
  4. Click Apply canvas, choose a folder, review the confirmation, and open the result.

The 1200 × 800 photo shrinks proportionally to 1080 × 720 and is centered with 240 background pixels above and below. The full result is 1080 × 1200. An input smaller than the available area is not enlarged and gets wider margins.

Saving, selection, and errors

Create copies retains the base name, such as producto.png, with a counter for conflicts. This mode preserves originals. Overwrite originals allows replacement. The file is re-encoded without guaranteed complete metadata preservation.

The preview updates when controls change, but processing begins only after clicking Apply canvas; then choose a folder and confirm. Create copies asks for an output folder and preserves inputs. Overwrite originals can replace sources when the format stays the same and after confirmation. If transparency requires a format conversion, the original is always kept. New files replace the batch. Clear empties all three tabs while retaining options. Canceling folder selection does not run the operation.

If the background is unexpected, inspect the selected option and output format. If the photo is too small within the canvas, remember Canvas only shrinks large images; resize a copy first to enlarge it.
